The Briar Shoppe in Houston sent out an e-mail about a presentation they're having of one of the employee's Dunhill collection. In it, they mentioned the Windshield Pipe that Alfred Dunhill developed in the very early part of the 20th century. I'd never heard of these. Wonder if they work at all? Maybe some home-carvers could give these a try (@321 One , talking to you!). Maybe the patent has expired and pro carvers could give it a try?

What do y'all think?

That's pretty interesting and even if I wouldn't have been likely to try that one, I just may give it a try since you thought of me. I appreciate that.
Hmmm .. I don't know .. I may have to put it on a list of possibilities for the future.

There were more elegant solutions for trying to meet the same need.

1907 Barling bulldog with wind screen:

But I find wind screens cause more problems than solve them by trapping way too much heat in the chamber.
Pardon the forums necromancy, but is that a horn stem?

It's a heck of a fine piece -- draped in enough silver to fill a treasury, AND a wind cap, AND a very graceful stummel shaping.
