@Tianlin started a thread asking how to stain a cob and I opened my big mouth and offered to do stuff-
https://pipesmokersdens.com/threads/absolute-novice-question-about-cob-modification.2951/

So here goes.

First I use a hair dryer to melt the glue holding the shank and band in place:

Then I use 400grit on the shank and cob to prep them for stain. In this photo I have already stained the shank black and sanded most of the color right back off:

In this photo I've added a couple more colors and am getting ready to start on the bowl:

Base layer of black, then sanded:

Stain should be thinned out at least 3:1 DNA/stain.
Apply in very light coats with a PC or Q-tip (*using too much at once will leach into the bowl). I use a hair dryer between colors.

More color:

Then more sanding.

Then more color...

And so on.

A quick peak at it assembled:

And then I decided to blend in some black at the end of the shank.

Then I sealed the shank and the bowl with 10:1 DNA/shellac. Apply in one coat as lightly as possible with no overlap. Then I dried with the hair dryer and left it sitting for a couple hours.

Then I buffed them using a Tripoli Buff - this should be done with a relatively light touch until you see all the colors you want to see.

Then I glued the shank in, and the band on, and hit the whole thing with a Carnuba Buff.

This is a really crappy photo so Tianlin will be extra happy when he sees it.

Easy.

There are many ways to skin a cat.
This is just my madness, er, method.

Thanks for this wonderful tutorial. Can you tell me what DNA stands for? Is it a particular type of alcohol? Thanks in advance.
