This topic is a bit of a dilemma because most people don't know how little they know. This is especially true of pipe smoking.
I have been smoking a pipe for over 20yrs and cigars even longer. It took me about 10yrs just to learn that there's always another way to get a different enjoyment from tobacco. And over the last 10+ years, I've learned I will never know enough to be an expert on any of this stuff. What I share is what I've gained from experience and/or what I believe to be true.

Maybe we should recommend that readers accept PSD posts as opinion rather than tell posters to consider posting less when advice is being given.

After all, if we question whether something "needs" to be posted here before we type out a message, the overwhelming majority of the time, the answer is always going to be "No".
Almost nothing here is "needed" in the grand scheme of things.

However, this isn't my sandbox. I'm just a neighborhood kid that stops by all the time.

It's a fine balance. Without the banter, the forum would die, or at the least become clinical. I've been smoking a pipe for 16 years & I'm by no means an expert. That doesn't mean I don't have a valid "opinion" (sometimes even a nugget of wisdom) to add though; just that nobody should take my opinion, or anybody else's, as fact.

It’s like I’m a mind reader.
Some dumbos made me a moderator of a Facebook pipe group with 13k members and about 100 new requests every day. Talk about herding cats. I never offer advice or feedback on things I don’t have experience with but I’m happy to help with the stuff I do which relatively is very little. What ends up happening is a classic case of the blind leading the blind with nuggets of truth by veterans tossed in somewhere. But what are you gonna do. After you burn your mouth to a crisp trying to keep your pipe lit by puffing harder eventually you’ll either quit or listen.

You lost me with Facebook.
And to be honest, with numbers.

Some good thoughts here.

One of the things that appeals to me about PSD, and I'm not alone in this, is that the overall sound level is pretty low, it's thoughtful, and the core culture is respectful. I think that has been built by both by leadership/moderators and the membership.

So, we (and by that, I mean basically everyone who agrees to adhere to the standards here) try to show that to newer people. And the forum needs new blood, 'cause topics get recycled and rehashed and after a while it all looks similar. Lots of knowledge here, and while I appreciate that time in the saddle isn't always a guarantee of that, it often is.

A deep breath, a bit of humility, and a 'do some reading then post' approach can work wonders.

There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don’t know we don’t know.

Getting a Lao Tzu vibe there.

I ended up in pipe forums because they seemed to be the 2nd best refuge of real pipe smokers. Nobody in here trying to make Zuckerbucks based on likes or shares.

Found some real dudes in here. There’s one or two who don’t post as much as I would like. Lots to give and few listening?

One great thing about this place is I can “Ignore” anyone I deem annoying or full of hot air, and I do. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound” and all that.

Lao Tzu lived in a hut and ate grass! It's actually a Rumsfeld quote....
