This is my exact opinion. You sir, have been reading my mail.I used to use them…then on a whim stopped and found it much more comfortable without. For me the extra thickness was uncomfortable and I’m not terribly worried about some scratches on the stem.
I think it all comes down to how you clench. This is my totally uneducated opinion…so caveat right up front. That said, if you apply any pressure or bite when you clench they are probably just the ticket. I personally just kind of let the pipe dangle so the bit sort of wedges against the back of my teeth with no pressure so for me they were just sort of some unnecessary thickness.
I drool with or without the pipei found them rather thick. I found myself drooling a lot.
I use a couple of things though. The stretchy self adhesive tape. It binds to itself and works very well. This tape actually has a memory of your bite marks.
I’ve found some clear thick hockey tape that works too. I think about 3 wraps of the hockey tape works well.
Some also use shrink wrap which I intend to try.
I bet they would have loved rubber bits for their clay pipes; ever clenched a clay? No.
If it didn’t exist in the pipe universe of our forefathers, then it has no reason to exist in mine.
I have a friend that uses the shrink wrap. It is MUCH thinner than the softies and seems to work fairly well.i found them rather thick. I found myself drooling a lot.
