I found a stick of 1/2” pine dowel rod in the garage left over from a project. I cut a few 3” long sticks that I squared and slightly rounded the ends on and have been using for tampers. They work great. I was worried about the resin but honestly, If you are tamping that hard or for that long you are doing something wrong.
So tonight I got a bit of bad news, a couple fingers of the strong stuff and lost my pipe tool in the grass. so I started finger tamping. It seems to be working well for me. As you gentlemen have said less tamping is more and that does seem to be bearing out rather splendidly.
Cheers to the remains of the day.
